Sunday Dinner in the Woods

On Sunday, we decided to go for a family picnic at McDowell Nature Preserve near our house. It was the perfect evening (warm, right around 80 degrees and a light breeze). We found the best spot, isolated but with a view of the lake and a relatively clean grill. While Scott got the grill going, Will and I searched for sticks for roasting mashmallows. Meanwhile, Alex munched on strawberries. The berries were so juicy that we ended up taking of his shirt. By the end, he was a happy, sticky mess. We enjoyed gourmet hotdogs, grilled sweet potatoes and blue Powerade. Then came the part Will had been waiting for...the roasted marshmallows.

A few days later, we were at Target (in the marshmallow aisle) and Will started reminiscing about our picnic. Next thing I know he spots pink/strawberry flavored marshmallows on the shelf. I didn't even know they made such a thing! What an earth are you supposed to do with PINK marshmallows? So, he insists we need to get them. Even though I'm not one to give in to spontaneous "Mom, I want this" purchases, I tell him to throw them in the cart (after all, it's 6:15pm, he's had no nap and I know that denying him the marshmallows will inevitably lead to a full-scale meltdown). Needless to say, he's anxiously awaiting our next family picnic so that he can roast PINK marshmallows.

Looks yummy! Pink marshmallows also make really tasty and pretty rice krispie treats. :)
