You know the saying "it's good to be home"? Well, we had an amazing 2 week trip to the UK but we sure are glad to be home to our own beds. I feel like we packed a ton in over the last 15 days. Even though I've spent several vacations in England and Wales over the years, there's always new experiences. Here's some of the highlights from our trip:
-the UK is VERY agricultural. My cousin Jane's husband Mike does a mean cow call. The boys were amazed that the cows right over the fence from their house all wandered over when they heard Mike's calls. On the plus side, with all the cows and pigs aroung, there are awesome fresh sausages everywhere you go. It must be my British heritage coming through, because I'm a sucker for fresh pork sausages. Oh, and I'll never turn down a plate of fish & chips either.
-We lucked out while in Yorkshire and got to see Thomas the Train. We usually go each year up to the NC mountains to see Thomas but we missed him this year since we were on vacation. It's amazing how Thomas can be in NC AND Yorkshire at the SAME time. Go figure!
-I can't figure it out, but every time we stopped to see a castle there was an ice cream truck parked out front. I'm not sure what it is with ice cream and castles but I like it!
-I realized what a small world it really is while we sat eating Thai food one night. There we were...Canadians living in the US visiting Swedes living in London eating great Thai. I love it!!
-when you order a lemonade in England, you might very well get Sprite. Even though the Rainforest Cafe in London had "fresh lemonade" on the menu, when I ordered "lemonade" I got Sprite. I guess I didn't say "fresh lemonade"?
-being so far north, the sun rises at 4am and doesn't set until after 10pm. For more than half of our trip, poor Scott was up at 4. And man, does a late sunset mess up your parental intuition about when it's time to put the kids to bed!!
-our trip really reminded us how BIG everything is in the US....fridges, washing machines, cars, roads, parking spots, etc. On more than one occasion Scott and I looked at each other and wondered "how the heck are we going to fit our Passat wagon rental into that parking spot?" No joke, our assigned parking spot the first night was directly BEHIND the elevator shaft to the hotel. Add to that the right-hand driving and shifting gears with your left hand. Insane!!
-we spent 3 nights with our Swedish friends in London. Will and their almost 4-year old daughter really hit it off and played constantly for 3 days. By the end of our visit, Will had acquired and English accent!! Too funny. He even started drinking warm milk.
-Will now likes to order "Baby-ccinos" at Starbucks. He feels all grown-up drinking his frothy milk with cocoa sprinkled on top.
-Lots of playgrounds in Wales have plastic ride-on tractors for the kids. Alex was in heaven!!!
