On Saturday, Will had his first skating lesson. He was excited, but I think Scott and I were more excited for him. He's in "Snowplow Sam level 1" for kids aged 3-5 who've never skated before. The class is 30 minutes with an instructor (well, actually 3 instructors for 15 kids) and then 30 minutes of practice time afterwards. The first thing they learned was how to get up after falling, which is a good thing since with 15 non-skaters on the ice it seemed that at any given time at least 7 of them were on the ground! It was sort of like a domino effect...whenever one fell, they usually took a few other kids down too. Thank goodness for helmets!
They practiced marching across the ice with their arms out for balance and threw little stuffed animals across the ice and then marched over to get them. Skating lessons have definitely gotten more innovative since I learned to skate 30 years ago! Will really enjoyed himself and stayed out for the full 30 minutes of practice time after his lesson. It helped that one of his best buddies from preschool was in a different class and they got to march/skate around the ice together afterwards.
We're all excited for next Saturday's lesson...it must be the nostalgia of all those hours both Scott and I spent in skating rinks as young kids. Man, I love being a parent...it brings back some great childhood memories.

Wow! Those kind of memories are pretty potent for me too! (River Oaks and Maplegrove Arenas come to mind.) Once Will gets the hang of skating (and hockey, I assume) you'll have to see if you can find a curling rink! I agree with you that skating lessons have been stepped up since our days - bowling has too - we never had bumpers or those ball-launching contraptions. Things sure have changed! Thanks for sharing your parenting joys ... your excitement is contagious!
Will looks so grown up!!
This is awesome! Go Will!
