On Thursday, my cousin Melanie (Mel) from Wales and her friend Carla came to visit. Mel's been travelling around the world for the last 9 months. She's on her "gap" year which in the UK means that after finishing high school, you typically take a year off before starting college. Most of the time, that means travelling. So, we were the last stop before the girls headed home on Sunday.
With it being crazy hot here (100 degrees for the last several days), we planned on going to the pool. But when we got there we discovered that it's only open on the weekends until school's out. So, we opted for plan B: the Slip 'N Slide on the front lawn. I'm not sure how compliant we were, given that we're still on some water restrictions with the drought but these Welsh folks weren't used to the heat and we had to do something!
That night, we took the girls to the US National Whitewater Center for the Subaru River Jam concert. The band was honkeytonk-style (think Johnny Cash), and were fun! We sat outside, drank beer, listened to the music and ate supper.
On Friday night, we went out on the boat to watch the Carolina Ski Team show. It's really cool- they do pyramids, ski barefoot and go off the jumps. Plus, it's twice as fun watching it from the
water! Tim came down from Greensboro too so he could catch up with his long-lost cousin. It was an awesome visit, and it made us realize how much we miss having our cousins living closer.
