June's a busy month for us. In addition to the rush to finish school projects, helping with clasroom parties, and celebrating the end of school we've got 3 celebrations that happen in an 11 day span: Alex's birthday, Father's Day and Will's birthday. Up until this year, I've been able to successfully merge the boys' birthdays into 1 joint party. But this year, Will put his foot down....it's not cool to celebrate your 7th birthday with your 4 year old brother. I don't blame him. But it sure would make my life a litter easier!
Alex's birthday fell on Will's last day of school. So, we celebrated with a party at the park with his friends. We had pizza, watermelon and lots of drinks since it was a crazy hot day (the weather forecast on my phone showed a cactus....no joke!) The heat didn't seem to phase the kids and Alex was in his element running around with his friends. For his birthday supper, he requested the local Japanese steakhouse where they cook in front of you. He loves it when the chef makes a volcano out of the onion rings and then throws broccoli for you to try and catch in your mouth.
Alex got a Paper Jamz guitar for his birthday, which was an instant hit. Here's the boys putting on a show:
The following Sunday was Father's Day. After church, we headed to Sticky Fingers (ribs) for Father's Day lunch. The place was pretty busy...apparently lots of Dads requested ribs for the occasion! We treated Scott to a new golf shirt and a gift certificate for a massage at Emerson Joseph (a men's only "grooming lounge" that serves beer).
Then, Will's birthday was Tuesday. After french toast for breakfast and a morning of opening gifts and playing outside we headed to the pool. Will aced his swim test this year and got a green swim band which lets him do all four of the waterslides. He spent the rest of the time doing the slides over and over with his friend Derek. It warmed my heart to hear him say "this is the best day ever"! For supper Will requested Cowfish, a "sushi burger bar" http://www.thecowfish.com/ We lucked out with seats at the bar, which was perfect for eating and people watching. Will even got a free birthday orange creamsicle milkshake for dessert! Then we came home and Will put on a skateboard show for us on his new "fly box ramp".
That Saturday, we had Will's skateboard party. We blocked off the street and set up 4 stations in the cul-de-sac with various skateboard activities: skateboard trick, bean bag toss (on your skateboard), skateboard obstacle course and skateboard ramp. The kids all had scorecards to record how they did and they got to choose their prize based on how they finished overall. The kids seemed to enjoy themselves and Will had a great time. Then, after all the kids had gone home things rolled straight into our weekly Saturday night tradition...a cul-de-sac party with music, the grill, beer and hanging out with the neighbors.
